House of the Week: A classic Edwardian gets a modern makeover in Elsternwick

You know those times you walk into a house and everything feels right? It doesn’t happen every day, but when it does the glow that comes is golden.

What we love here is that although the house is essentially a complete rebuild from its Edwardian origins, its gorgeous facade has been retained and polished.

It begins just beyond a deep, bluestone-paved front garden with a side entry that adds a sense of privacy.

Turn sharp left on your heel to enter the large formal lounge where an angled fireplace and lovely leadlight bay window are the best features.

As the long hallway heads west you pass two terrific bedrooms. The first has a view to the pretty tessellated-tile front verandah and offers wall-to-wall storage.

Sitting just behind is bedroom two with a side aspect and more storage.

Across the way on the right is the sleek bathroom. Here the Carrara marble vanity contrasts beautifully with the luminous American oak underneath.

Head towards the north-westerly rear and you’ll pass the powder room and laundry to the left, and on the right there’s the third bedroom preceded by a line of hallway storage.

Take a few steps down and a study area benefits from being close to the rear open-plan action, but not right in it.

We love this kitchen/living/dining area where walls of floor-to-ceiling, black-framed glass draw in the northern light and illuminate the entire space.

The kitchen set to the left is a cool, composed picture with a long island bench and preparation areas clad in that classic Carrara marble. A gorgeous Japanese tiled splashback and acres of storage space, including a walk-in pantry, complete the urbane room.

At the front, the living area has a beautiful brick feature hearth with bluestone surrounds and those superb windows punch in to create a hallway that leads to the main suite.

A sliding door opens onto  an en suite with that perfect marriage of marble and oak.

The main bedroom is a haven set at the end of the house with access to a wedge of north-facing deck that runs back to the outside of the living area.

There’s not a huge amount of garden but what’s there is positively soaked in those magnificent northern rays, coming soon to a springtime near you.
