House of the Week: Luxury and light in this fabulous Fitzroy terrace

The days are getting that tiny bit longer and with the little bit of light comes the promise of a glorious Melbourne spring.

This magnificent Victorian terrace in Fitzroy would be an ideal place to bask in that sunny beauty; but even now, in the depths of the cold and grey, this is a luminous home.

Sitting in a fine Fitzroy spot, between Smith and Brunswick streets, there are plenty of entertainment options a stroll from your front door. Even so, it’d take all that and a bit more to get you out of the comfort and class of this place on a chilly July evening.

The classic long hallway opens onto two downstairs bedrooms. The first is a generous space with light filtering through from the east via windows over the atmospheric Fitzroy streetscape.

Sitting between here and bedroom two is a fine central bathroom – crisp, white and stylish with a large corner glass shower and floating stone vanity. A neat laundry is folded into the space just in front.

At the rear right a second bedroom boasts vibrant deep red and pink storage plus its own red-tiled en suite through a glass door in the corner.

You can head to the lovely little green courtyard from here or via the end of the hall.

Out here you can catch some north-west sun in the pretty space or stash the car off the tight local streets.

Back inside head up the stairs and into one of the finest areas we’ve seen all year. This is just a sublime space, perfectly configured, effortlessly good. The kitchen sits centrally up here, a handsome mix of timber cabinetry, stainless steel preparation benches and top-notch appliances.

To the east, the magnificent living area flows across to two sets of French doors onto a beautiful lacework balcony. Gorgeous.

On the other side of the kitchen there’s the excellent dining space, illuminated by the western sun that filters through this level. Another balcony with a high opaque privacy balustrade has enough room for some decent sized outdoor furniture and offers terrific standing city views.

Go up again and you’re straight into the masterful main bedroom. There’s that light, another city-view balcony, brilliant walk-in wardrobes flanking the passage that leads to the deeply impressive peaked glass roofed en suite. The main feature here the free-standing bath set dead centre so you can watch the stars glow above.

Fitzroy luxury and light. Superb.
