White is still our most popular decorating colour. It is light, bright and airy and is easy to add your own style and overlay accessories to bring it to life. But it can also be tricky to choose the perfect shade. Here are some of Paint Place Mitchell’s easy tips to ensure you get it right the first time.

Which white is best for your room?

When deciding which white is best for your home, reflect on the amount of light your room receives and how you want the room to feel.

A coat of white paint can easily transform a room – making a cold stark room cosy and inviting or cooling down a hot, bright room to make it easier to live in.

How can white paint make a room feel warmer?

Warming a room with white paint is easy. Choose a white with subtle undertones of yellow or brown such as New Look Harmonious Day or Enchanting.

We highly recommend using these colours if your room doesn’t receive much natural light, these warm whites can make a room feel cosy and welcoming.

How can you make a room feel cooler?

If the room gets overly warm in summer, calm it down with a cool shade of white. Cool whites have a blue or a black/grey undertone. These will make the room easier to live in and can often make it appear more spacious. We recommend New Look Hunky Dory or No Drama.

How can paint make a room look larger?

Make your room feel bigger than it is by asking Paint Place Mitchell to make up a half or quarter strength shade of the wall colour for your ceilings and trims. This will give the illusion of height. If you are using a neutral on the wall, then select a shade of white with the same undertones (such as grey white, or a yellow white) for the trims and ceilings to create an illusion of height.

What is the best white paint to use with a timber floor?

Timber floors can be tricky to match with white walls. Try and keep your undertones the same – warm or cool. If you have yellow-based timber floors, go for a warm white with a very subtle undertone of yellow. If your floors have a red base, opt for a warm white.
