When many people think of brown interiors they think of dark and dingy 1970s-era homes.

But a Sydney interior designer says that doesn’t have to be the case and has put together a list of her favourite ways to style a brown hue which was recently named Pantone’s 2025 Colour of the Year.

Pantone is widely considered the global authority on colour and each year announces its pick for colour of the year. This year it chose Mocha Mousse (Pantone 17-1230).

In a press release announcing the choice, Pantone said the colour echoed the “collective desire for connection and harmony,” while the suggestions of chocolate and coffee appealed “to our desire for comfort.”

Now Justine Wilson, founder of Sydney-based Vault Interiors, has shared her best ways to use the colour, which is expected to trend in 2025.

“Mocha Mousse is such a versatile colour,” Wilson said.

“It works across a range of interior styles, from sleek and contemporary, to warm and traditional.

“It’s a colour that not only adds depth to a space but also creates a comforting and grounded atmosphere.”

Mocha Mousse was chosen by The Block 2024 contestants Mimi and Kristian for the cinema room component of the common clubhouse area.

Here, Wilson gives her tips on the best way to introduce the colour to your home.

Play with paint

According to Wilson, paint is one of the easiest ways to refresh your space, but you don’t have to go overboard.

“Try Mocha Mousse as a feature wall to create a focal point in a living room or bedroom,” she said.

“Or, for a more subtle effect, use it on trims, doors, or even to upcycle old furniture.”

 Layer with decor

Whether or not you choose to make a splash with paint, you can use the colour in other ways in your home.

“Adding layers of decor in similar tones creates visual interest and a cohesive look,” Wilson said.

“Think vases, books, rugs, or cushion covers in caramel, camel and chocolate shades.

“These elements work beautifully together to give your space depth and warmth.”

 Add textures with fabrics

Using fabrics was another way to bring Mocha Mousse into your home.

“Rich fabrics, such as chocolate velvet curtains or a Mocha Mousse-toned bedspread bring a luxurious and cosy vibe to any room,” she said.

“Even small touches, such as a throw blanket or textured lamp shades can make a big impact.”

 Highlight with artwork

Artwork is another fantastic way to bring earthy tones into the home, Wilson said.

“Look for prints, paintings or abstract pieces that feature warm browns and beiges,” she said.

“Or, get creative – frame a piece of textured wallpaper or fabric to create your own bespoke artwork.”

 Bring nature indoors

Wilson suggests looking to nature to bring brown tones into the home.

“Introduce them through natural elements, such as magnolia leaves, pampas grass, or branches wrapped in fairy lights,” she said.

“These details bring warmth, texture and an organic feel to your space.”
