If walls could speak, no doubt those of The Lobby restaurant in the heart of Canberra’s parliamentary triangle would have some colourful tales to tell.
Anyone who is – or was – anyone would have wined and dined in this elegant, architecturally designed pavilion overlooking the National Rose Gardens.
The 50-year-old venue is now looking to hear some stories from potential new owners as to how they would continue the legacy of this iconic hospitality venue.
Expressions of Interest are being sought by the National Capital Authority. Chief planner Andrew Smith says the sale represents an opportunity for the private sector to invest in and reinvigorate a much-loved Canberra landmark.
“We’re eager to see a revitalisation of the space, which has the potential to continue to be a successful establishment in one of Canberra’s most prominent locations,” Smith says.
While it is not currently listed, the NCA will continue to ensure the heritage value of The Lobby is protected after the property is sold.
“The NCA and the Commonwealth would remain committed to protecting and preserving its heritage values as well as the Commonwealth Heritage-listed landscape in which it is located,” Smith says.
The Lobby restaurant building occupies some 408 square metres with a 47-square-metre external deck and a 172-square-metre kiosk. The Lobby dining capacity is licensed for 136 people.
