Not so long ago, Kings Cross was famous for the Golden Mile, a stretch of nightclubs, strip joints and fast-food outlets that came alive after dark.

Times have changed, and now the Kings Cross end of Potts Point near the train station is establishing itself as an upmarket residential destination to rival the “Paris end” of the suburb near Macleay Street.

New luxury developments such as Omnia from Greenland Australia are at the vanguard of the shift, as CBRE Residential Projects director Ben Stewart explains.

“There still is the Paris end, there’s no doubt about that, but the Paris end is growing ever so quickly towards the Coca-Cola sign,” Stewart says. “There is a huge transformation underway.”

Lockout laws introduced four years ago in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour in central Sydney are often cited as one of the main reasons for the dramatic gentrification of Kings Cross, which is home to a burgeoning cafe, dining and retail scene.

Agents are reporting more downsizers and young families are deciding to call the neighbourhood home, adding to the more usual young-professional demographic.

Omnia is a curvaceous 19-storey tower opposite the iconic Coca-Cola sign near Kings Cross station. Construction on the Durbach Block Jaggers-designed building is nearly complete.

Details of the jewels in the crown of the development – three dual-level penthouse apartments – were unveiled this month. Two are still available, in addition to six two and three-bedroom apartments, out of the project’s 132 residences.

Greenland Australia’s managing director Sherwood Luo says the penthouses have attracted inquiries from prospective buyers impressed by the location and harbour views.

“Apart from a luxurious interior design concept and superior finishes, Omnia is also situated in one of Sydney’s best-selling locations,” Luo says.

“The four-bedroom penthouses have floor-to-ceiling curved windows with stunning wall-to-wall city views in every direction.”

Studio Aria has designed the penthouse interiors to include soaring ceilings, white oak floors, living-room fireplaces, oversized glass walls and huge balconies.

All residents will have access to the building’s podium-level landscaped gardens, designed by Aspect Studios. Level one has a supermarket, speciality stores and restaurants.

Omnia is two kilometres from Martin Place – 10 minutes by train. Rushcutters Bay, Woolloomooloo, Hyde Park and the Royal Botanic Garden are just a walk away.
