In the first series of sumptuous Netflix drama The Crown, Princess Margaret, played by Vanessa Kirby, describes Greece as “a country which has brought us many things: philosophy, democracy … my brother-in-law”.

There’s a case to be made that this trio of highlights should be updated for modern times to include Sky Crest, a majestic villa built into the cliffs above the main port town on the island of Mykonos.

Yannis Ploumis, the managing director of Ploumis Sotiropoulos Real Estate, an affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate, describes Mykonos – part of the Cyclades group – as one of Greece’s most beautiful and glamorous islands.

“The islet is famous for its beaches, restaurants overlooking the sea and the striking blue and white buildings as you approach the mainland,” Ploumis says. “Cycladic architecture is characteristic of all houses in Mykonos, with their white and almost translucent facades.”

Sky Crest, listed with an asking price of €4.5 million (about $6.89 million), is located on a 4000-square-metre parcel of land near the Mykonos town centre. The six-bedroom property captures panoramic views of the port town and the Aegean Sea beyond.

The 650-square-metre villa’s interiors epitomise minimalist chic, with curvaceous white walls, dramatic timber-beamed ceilings and an abundance of archways.

An infinity swimming pool appears to merge with the seascape. There’s also a guest house and staff quarters.

There are regular international flights and frequent connections to Athens by plane or boat.

Current market

“The buyers for this island are international,” Ploumis says. “It is a jet-set destination, alongside Ibiza, St Tropez and Sardinia.”

Ploumis says the market outlook is excellent. This sunny view must be considered alongside the property market’s cloudy past, which saw prices tumble when the economy tanked in 2009.

While the economy is clawing its way back, the property market hasn’t been leading the charge.

Can Australians buy in?

There are no restrictions on foreigners buying in Mykonos.

The government even offers fast- tracked EU residency for many buyers. Just watch out for the burly Greek taxation system.
