Double Bay: It's not just 'high-flyers and downsizers' flocking to this bougie 'burb

In the world of “keeping up with the Joneses”, Double Bay might just be the Joneses themselves. With its unapologetic ritz and fashionable flair, this harbourside enclave proudly screams, “Look at me!” And honestly, who could resist staring?

Yet beyond its tinsel exterior, exemplified by the chic, high-end boutiques nestled within the townhouse-style shop fronts of Transvaal Avenue, Double Bay cradles a natural charm along its shores. Quiet, enchanting parks scatter across its leafy streets, while the calm waves at the Murray Rose Pool gently lap alongside the scenic Blackburn Cove foreshore.

A suburb’s revived era

James Dunn, director of Richardson & Wrench Double Bay, remarks on its diverse mix of residents, defining a community that intermingles the young and the old, families and corporates, all flourishing under one harmonious umbrella.

“Double Bay has traditionally attracted high-flyers and downsizers, many of whom opt for lavish apartments along Cross, Bay, and Knox Streets,” says Dunn. “Yet, we’re seeing a rising number of younger couples settling in townhomes or art deco residences, infusing a refreshing vitality into this Sydney jewel.”

This era of renewal also heralds a surge in new developments, which, according to Dunn, will continue to draw international buyers and expats. With a younger crowd finding a home here, rental demand escalates, piquing the interest of investors.

“Residents love visiting the parks and the beach, fine dining at the likes of Margaret and Matteo, while families relish walking their kids to some of the best schools,” adds Dunn. “Meanwhile, professionals are often spotted grabbing their morning coffee en route to the city via ferry, while peaceful Double Bay anticipates their evening return.”

Serenity on the shoreline

Over three decades ago, when Robynne Arnouts traded Melbourne for Double Bay, the lush, welcoming environment and a palpable sense of community made her feel instantly at home.

“At the time, unfamiliar with Sydney, I was drawn to Double Bay for its beach access, shopping variety, and choice of transport, not least the joy of getting on the ferry and gliding across the harbour,” Arnouts reflects. “Even after all these years, it brings me such immense joy.”

Robynne’s bond with the area has only deepened over the years. Today, she is a member of the 18 Footers Club.

“Weekends often find me at the sailing club, savouring a quiet aperitif. Its architecture is striking, and basking on its deck during a sunny afternoon is quintessential Sydney,” she shares. “On Sundays, witnessing the skiffs gear up or hopping on the 18 Footers Ferry to follow the race is sheer delight.”
