A charming California ranch once owned by musician Johnny Cash has been listed for sale with an asking price of $US1.79 million ($2.59 million).

Set over a 24,281-square-metre block, the rustic mid-century abode boasts five bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms and a total internal living space of nearly 420 square metres.

According to the listing: “Johnny bought the land and built the house to his exact specifications; walking the rooms and deciding on exact placement and layout. He created a secluded sanctuary, unique to this rural small-town enclave. Longtime locals recount stories of Johnny setting up speakers on the hillside outside the house, and playing concerts for the townspeople down below.”

And many of the Man in Black’s personal touches have been kept largely original since the home’s construction in 1961.

An example of the Ring of Fire singer’s inclusions is a wood-panelled studio where the legendary musician is said to have written some of his songs.

Other Cash-specific features include a black toilet, dark-coloured shower tiles and an expansive kitchen replete with its original cabinetry and even a wall-mounted record player and period-correct radio.

Other benefits include a large outdoor pool, home office, al fresco barbeque area and a long, private driveway.

Set among the bucolic hills of California’s Ojai Valley, there are sweeping views over the quaint town of Casitas Springs.

Cash called the ranch home along with his first wife, Vivian Liberto, and their three children until the pair divorced in 1966.
