A Melbourne home made famous as the former residence of Ex-PM Julia Gillard is up for grabs, complete with an unusual feature designed to prevent an attack.
The single storey brick home at 9 Medford Street in Altona was owned by Gillard from 1998 until 2013 and is on the market with a guide of $1.08 to $1.18 million.
Australia’s first female prime minister bought the modest property for $140,000 in 1998 as she embarked on her federal parliamentary career, later listing it in 2013 after being deposed as Labor leader by Kevin Rudd, three years after ousting him.
Gillard sold the home for $250,000 above guide at $921,000, with huge crowds at the auction. She moved with partner Tim Mathieson to Adelaide to begin her next chapter.
While it’s been almost a decade since Gillard last lived in the home, former sales agent Anna Grech told Domain “there is obviously a bit of history attached to the house” and an “intangible value”.
Gillard was famously photographed for The Age in 2005 at her kitchen table, an image which became widely ridiculed for the empty fruit bowl on the table.
The green cupboards seen in that image are gone – the kitchen was remodelled in a 2008 renovation by Gillard and now features white cabinetry, a stone island bench and stainless steel appliances.
Gillard refurbished the original property and added an extension at the rear featuring a second living room, main bedroom with ensuite and walk-in-robe, and a deck.
But there is a more unusual feature that remains in the home, installed for security reasons.
Multiple red bollards can be seen in the front yard and could easily be mistaken for a sculptural art piece. However, these were inserted by Federal Police to prevent a vehicle attack on the property.
The three-bed, two-bath home in Melbourne’s south west sits on a 602sqm block. There are two living areas, a dining room, a main suite with walk-in robe and ensuite, two gas log fireplaces – a feature Gillard and Mathieson “loved” – and a large north-facing deck.
The current downsizing owners are locals who know Gillard from her days as a Member for Lalor.
The home reportedly includes a couple of tributes to the former resident, including a framed copy of that infamous kitchen portrait, and one of Gillard in the Oval Office with former US President Barack Obama.
Elle Zhu from Levin Group Docklands holds the listing and it is scheduled to go to auction on April 3.
