You don’t need to be a member of the Killara Golf Club to appreciate the tree-lined, undulating fairways sprawling across more than 50 hectares of tranquil parkland.

On the south-west side of the geographical heart of the suburb, the course has just undergone a $5 million facelift with new greens, bunkers and surrounds, providing neighbouring properties with a beautifully manicured outlook studded with hundreds of majestic trees.

There are cypress and cedar groves, hoop and bunya pines, brushbox, blackbutt, white and red gums and stands of tallowwood.

The golf course, which celebrates its 122nd birthday this year, adds to the generous tree canopy, which gives the upper north shore its “leafy” reputation.

Killara scores well for open space, tree cover and topographic variation, and also for safety, telecommunications access and train access.

Family favourite

Killara Golf Club general manager David Gazzoli grew up in the surrounding suburbs and raised his own family in Killara over the past 25 years.

“It’s a wonderful area to bring up children,” he says.

“We’ve always had a good fabric up here, good society and amenities, great sports fields and golf courses, the theatre and railway. The shopping centres of Lindfield and Gordon are to either side and growing all the time, so we have peace and quiet in Killara with easy access to amenities.”

Gazzoli says he is a regular witness to the unique bonds created within a social hub like the golf club, which sometimes span multiple generations.

“You see it all the time at a club like ours; the strong community ties are really evident at the functions held here and within local clubs like Rotary and Probus.”

Stone Real Estate Lindfield principal Steven Kourdis says the local clubs act as the social epicentres of the upper north shore, with families the key demographic in a region known for its top public and private schools.

Space to grow

Kourdis, who grew up in Killara and has been selling property in the suburb for 16 years, says it’s not uncommon for residents to move out as young adults and then return to the suburb to raise their own family.

When their kids reach school age, they seem to return and embrace what they knew and loved growing up: the parks everywhere, the open space, the excellent schools and the security,” he says.

The suburb is blessed with lots of lifestyle property boasting tennis courts, swimming pools and magical gardens; the trick is finding enough stock to meet demand when more and more buyers are seeking the luxury of space.

“It’s a blue-ribbon suburb that always seems to appreciate in value,” says Kourdis.

“It’s very much a desirable destination.”
