Lavender Bay: The glam micro-burb where locals turn into tourists

If ever there was a place that defines what living in an Australian postcard feels like, the glamorous suburb of Lavender Bay may just be it – a prestigious postcode that allows residents to live alongside Sydney’s most iconic attractions.

In fact, life in Lavender Bay means partaking in scenic activities that become the norm. Like taking strolls around the glittering harbour, counting laps in the North Sydney Olympic Pool and watching the New Year’s Eve fireworks over the Harbour Bridge from first-class seats called “home”.

Life in a postcard

According to Alison Coopes, managing director of Agency by Alison Coopes, Lavender Bay is mostly home to established and mature professionals who love to indulge in the idyllic lifestyle that the harbourside hub affords.

“Locals to Lavender Bay appreciate a slower pace of life,” Coopes says. “They love to wander around parklands, have picnics with the kids, and enjoy dining and shopping along Blues Point Road.

“While the suburb is nicely tucked away, it has easy access to all infrastructure, including quick commutes to North Sydney and the CBD for work, and has many prominent schools within a 10-minute drive.”

With a population of 870 recorded in the 2021 census, Lavender Bay has a village-like atmosphere, where historic homes are treated as tightly-held treasures.

A remarkable example is 11 Bay View Street, described as “the most significant property and enduring asset to present to the Sydney market in years”.

“This landmark home is currently the only waterfront residence on the market in Lavender Bay, and the suburb has only seen seven noted sales this year,” Coopes says.

“This gives you an idea of just how rare and cherished these incredible homes are. Once buyers call this location home, they tend to stay for many generations to come.”

Sea of lavender

With neighbouring suburbs that are equally pretty as a picture, residents of Lavender Bay can also rely on Milsons Point and Kirribilli for their everyday delights.

For instance, there’s a stellar lineup of cafes that befit the Australian culture, like the photogenic Celsius Coffee & Dining floating above Kirribilli Wharf.

“My connection to this area is in the relationships that I have built with the local community through my cafes,” says owner Steven Chrun.

“There’s no better way to spend a weekend morning in Sydney than snagging a window seat at Celsius for a coffee or a bite before heading to the Kirribilli Markets to then snag a vintage find.”

Just when you think Lavender Bay couldn’t be easier on the eye, each year at the tail-end of October, this striking suburb’s apt name hits home all the more.

“The beauty of these neighbourhoods never gets old, particularly when the jacaranda trees burst with light purple coloured flowers, best of all along McDougall Street in Kirribilli and from Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden in Lavender Bay,” Chrun says.

“Even locals turn into tourists over these magnificent trees as they pose for that perfect Instagram shot.”
