Macaulay Culkin has confessed he wanted to buy the Home Alone movie mansion.

The property in Winnetka, Illinois, is instantly recognisable as the McCallister family home, and has been on the market for 208 days.

The listing for the $US5.25 million ($AU8.4 million) property heralds this charming bit of Hollywood history.

671 Lincoln Ave, Winnetka - aka the 'Home Alone' house.

Movie buffs love the house so much that every Christmas, police are forced to patrol in case of break-ins and vandals. Fans gather at the gate come December for a photo.

Culkin’s role as the cheeky Kevin McCallister in the much-loved yuletide movie made him a star. The first installment of the franchise was released in 1990 and was the second-highest grossing movie of the year.

The Home Alone house is under offer but Culkin, now 44, isn’t the buyer. He is on a national tour and at an event in Illinois, he told the crowd he had toyed with the idea and had a concept of what he’d do with it.

He told a crowd, according to the New York Times: “I had half a mind to buy it — just for giggle”.

He said he’d convert it into a “movie fun house” for fans to come inside and experience, but was too busy with his family to entertain the idea further.

The status for the listing on US-marketplace is pending, indicating an offer has been made.
