Charming villages dot this region, each offering its culinary delights, from cosy cafes and classic pubs to hatted restaurants and boutique wineries. Weekends celebrate fresh produce at the bustling farmers’ market, where locals rave about the crumpets from Millett Road Maker – be sure to arrive early before they sell out.

The crown jewel of central Victoria

Matthew Makin, director of Woodards Sunbury, has deep roots in the area, having lived with its backdrop his entire life. He highlights the region’s spectacular lifestyle, making it a haven for families and professionals seeking more space and serenity.

“The push from metropolitan buyers looking for more room has been significant in recent years,” says Makin. “This blend of long-time locals and newcomers creates a dynamic population that’s constantly evolving yet deeply ingrained.”

Often hailed as the crown jewel of central Victoria, the Macedon Ranges offer a wide range of properties, from charming weekenders to trophy estates. One of its main townships, Mount Macedon, dubbed the“Toorak of the north”, entices an affluent crowd with its prestigious homes and stunning scenery.

“Think local village vibes, collective spirit, and the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure,” Makin describes. “With beautiful parks, heritage buildings, and proximity to both metropolitan Melbourne and the countryside, the Macedon Ranges strike an ideal balance.”

City slickers to cider makers

For Jennylyn Abalos and Marc Serafino, the region’s fertile volcanic soil and distinct seasons provide ideal conditions for their award-winning cider. Their family-run business, DV Cider House, located in the small township of Darraweit Guim, embodies the area’s welcoming spirit.

“We moved here to plant heritage cider apple trees and make craft cider from real apples,” Abalos says. “Switching from having only a tiny nature strip in inner-city Melbourne to 42 acres of land was a massive but amazing change for our family—the kids love it here, and our cider house has become a beloved gathering hub.”

The camaraderie in the Macedon Ranges is palpable, evident in Abalos’ pride in the close-knit network of artisans and farmers she coexists with. Within ten minutes of their cider house, she praises local producers like Dreaming Goat Dairy, Chin Chin Farm, and Madelaine’s Eggs.

“One of the coolest things about living here is personally knowing your farmer and producer,” Abalos adds. “The rolling hills in our valley feel like home, and there’s nothing like coming home to that.”
