Geographically gifted within a sweet spot of Victoria’s coveted Mornington Peninsula, Main Ridge is tucked between the lush hills of Red Hill and the coastal charm of Flinders, yet only a little over an hour from Melbourne.

The essence of this rural enclave lies in its gum tree-lined roads, which reveal stunning views over a countryside peppered with wineries, artisan producers, and quaint accommodations. A step off the beaten tourist track, it presents a slower-paced lifestyle.

Country meets the coast

According to Meg Pell of Kay & Burton Portsea, Main Ridge is a magnet for those seeking serenity and space, from young families wanting more room to grow to retirees in search of a restful haven and weekenders with visions of country bliss and hobby farms.

“Here, properties range from sprawling acreages to the few residential-sized blocks available, all set against a stunning rural backdrop,” Pell says. “And while you may not find a commercial strip, the area is home to renowned businesses such as Ten Minutes by Tractor [winery] and Rocky Creek Strawberry Farm.”

Beyond its scenic landscape, Pell highlights the region’s commitment to preserving its natural beauty through green wedge zoning.

“Main Ridge, like much of the Mornington Peninsula’s hinterland, is poised to become even more precious over time,” Pell says. “With regulations like a minimum subdivision of 100 acres, it’s destined to retain its status as an unspoiled locale, making it an ideal investment and living space, whether full-time or part-time.”

Rich soils yield truffle treasure

Michael Linton has lived here for over 70 years. After running a renowned garden centre for decades, he retired in 2010 and ventured into truffle farming with Main Ridge Truffles.

“We unearthed our first truffle in 2015 and have since been recognised for our premium-quality truffles, favoured by top chefs and establishments across the peninsula,” Linton shares. “Thanks to the region’s fertile soil, we cultivate both black winter and white truffles, renowned for their exceptional aroma and flavour.”

Linton, who has seen generations of his family grow and thrive in the area, speaks of its unparalleled sense of calm, even more so than its nearby coastal towns. His affection for the land and its people is evident.

“Our truffiere overlooks Greens Bush, the largest parcel of remnant bushland on the peninsula, with its natural display of eucalyptus, grass trees, and ferns,” he says. “Around the corner, Lil’s Yolky Dokey Eggs offers the bounty of their ‘gypsy chickens,’ who roam free during the day and sleep in their caravans at night.”
