Michael Hickey is going to extreme lengths to save for a property.
The very prudent Hickey is sleeping in his car and racking up long hours as a takeaway delivery driver to squirrel away enough cash for his dream – a tiny home.
The American is sharing his life and endeavour on YouTube and TikTok, where he has a combined 961,000 followers.
Hickey has saved £39,000 ($AU75,550) by living in the most frugal manner imaginable. His target is £60,000 ($AU116,220), in a timeframe of six months. The 24-year-old is on day 142.
He works as a DoorDash and UberEats delivery driver and finds a safe spot at night to park his car. Sometimes that is by a river, with a mountain view, Other times it is a retail carpark, where he was woken to teenagers arguing with a homeless man, or unhappy local residents banging on his window.
Hickey loads updates to his social media accounts, documenting the compact living quarters, where he bunks down after an 11-hour work day.
He showers at Planet Fitness gym, eats food from a portable cooler (breakfast could be as simple as two hard-boiled eggs from the Esky) and reclines the passenger seat all the way back to sleep, under a doona. He hangs a fan in the car, from the levers above the passenger doors, to stay comfortable on humid nights.
Hickey is currently in Seattle and is “cherry picking” delivery jobs, he says on Tiktok, to ensure he maximises his earnings.
The US Federal Reserve Bank last month cut rates – the first easing in years – and more are expected, according to analysts.
