More than 70 apartments and another 23 townhouses are slated for Macquarie as part of plans for a mixed-use precinct at Jamison Centre.
The mix of one, two, three and four-bedroom dwellings will be spread across five buildings as part of the $25 million development proposed for land wedged between the shopping centre and Redfern Street.
Developer Morris Property Group has lodged a development application for the project with the ACT Planning and Land Authority.
If approved, the two tallest buildings will be capped at 15 metres and include a total 1185 square metres of ground-floor commercial retail space beneath four storeys of residential units.
Retail space will include a central shared courtyard for outdoor dining.
Town housing will be spread among three two-storey buildings facing Redfern Street.
Morris Property Group development manager Geordie Edwards said the five proposed buildings would form part of the broader Macquarie Park precinct.
The organisation is behind the Bowman Villas development on Bowman Street, the remaining slice of the overarching precinct.
Mr Edwards said there was a growing desire for single-level, two to three-bedroom units in particular, largely due to existing residents wanting to downsize without leaving the area.
“Most people interested in the project area from the greater Belconnen area looking to upgrade to a place closer to the shops,” he said.
“A lot of people in the existing area use the facilities and want to move closer.”
Mr Edwards said the commercial space would face Jamison Centre and link to the existing shops.
“This [project] will change the vibe of the area for the better and and create more of a community,” he said.
The multi-unit buildings will include basement parking, while the townhouses will come with double garage parking.
Zoning will allow the ground-floor townhouses facing Redfern Street to be converted into home offices.
Mr Edwards said the time frame for construction of the project would depend on a mid-year sales and marketing process, beginning with the launch of the new development’s apartments.
The townhouses will follow at a later date once the existing Bowman Villas are complete.
Mr Edwards said most of the first 13 Bowman Street townhouses had sold, while stage two of the development would bring another 13 townhouses to the area.
He said the townhouses outlined in Morris Property Group’s latest development application would reflect the character of the existing townhouses approved for Bowman Street.
