Often hailed as Australia’s most beautiful alpine village, Mount Buller is a picturesque escape famed for its snow-capped mountain vistas and tranquil snow-gum forests.
Located just a three-hour drive from Melbourne, its premium facilities, well-designed layout and leading programs entice skiers, snowboarders and serenity seekers.
A thrilling snow season is virtually guaranteed, with its world-class snowmaking facilities, 80 kilometres of marked runs, and the largest lift network in Victoria that transports over 40,000 people an hour.
Add to this picture a genuinely welcoming community of 333 permanent residents, and it’s no wonder why many make their way back each year to revel in this winter wonderland.
Zach Adams of Adams Estate Agents says the village holds great appeal to families with its excellent ski programs, interschool competitions and education program that allows children to attend school on the mountain during term three.
“Families often invest in luxury apartments and chalets – properties that are typically held for decades,” he says. “With most of the village already developed, real estate here is limited, ensuring a reliable and steadily growing market.”
While Mount Buller is at its most magnificent in winter, Adams says significant investments have contributed to its transformation as a leading year-round destination.
“Australia’s first alpine ‘via ferrata’, RockWire, has just been announced, enhancing our summer offerings with guided climbs alongside activities like horse riding and bushwalking,” he says.
“We also have Epic trail, a 40-kilometre mountain bike ride that descends over 1000 vertical metres from Mount Buller’s summit into the valley below.”
Internationally recognised photographer Tony “Harro” Harrington spends his winters here. Through his local HarroArt gallery, he shares the mountain’s magic through his lens.
“My jaw hit the ground during my first visit to Mount Buller in 2003 when I was invited to photograph the legendary Olympian Steve Lee,” Harro recalls.
“The 360-degree views, varied terrain, and the summit’s sunsets were stunningly beautiful.”
Having spent nearly four decades taking photographs in various ski resorts across Australia and New Zealand, Harro’s “office” spans the spectacular and sublime. Yet, it’s Mount Buller that resonates with him the most.
“Of all the places I’ve worked, Mount Buller remains the most impressive for its scenery, accessibility, and the warmth of its community, particularly the friendly lift operators,” he says.
“Every day, as I make my way through the snow-covered gum trees for work, I really do have to pinch myself.”
