A colourful house located in a Tasmanian town known for its murals is for sale for more than $380,000.

The three-bedroom property, 100 High Street, Sheffield, is set on a 1009-square-metre block and has been freshly updated inside.

The unique home is known locally as the ‘Mural House’ but is far from the only colourful offering in the town, which is located 23 kilometres from Devonport.

Known as Tasmania’s outdoor art gallery, many of the buildings in Sheffield feature murals, which first appeared on buildings in the main streets before spreading to neighbouring areas.

The murals were the brainchild of a committee formed in the 1980s with the purpose of reviving the town. Committee members based the idea on a town in Canada, which had undertaken a similar experiment.

Sheffield held its first Mural Fest in 2003, which is now an annual event.

Now homebuyers have the chance to purchase their own home in ‘Mural Town’.

Selling agent Corrine Nicholson from Roberts Real Estate Sheffield said the unique property has been lovingly updated inside with fresh paint, new carpet and a modernised kitchen.

Two large brightly muralled sheds are also on the property.

The new owner could keep the murals or paint over them if they preferred.

The home is located within walking distance of the town’s shops, cafes, schools and medical facilities.
