Chris Watts' Colorado murder house listed for sale for $1 million

A convicted killer’s high-profile family home is for sale.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom property at 2825 Saratoga Trail in Frederick, Colorado, in the US, is where Chris Watts took the life of his pregnant wife Shanann and their two children on August 13, 2018.

Watts is serving five life sentences plus 48 years in prison without the possibility of parole at the Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun, Wisconsin.

The home, which featured in the 2020 Netflix documentary about Watts’ crime, American Murder: The Family Next Door, is listed for $US775,000 ($AU1,190,310) by Rovena L. Flores of Dream Real Estate.

After pleading for their safe return in television interviews, Watts eventually confessed to the murders.

The listing does not disclose the murder. Under US law, only the states of Alaska, California and South Dakota must disclose a murder if it occurred at a property for sale. In Alaska and South Dakota, agents must disclose a murder or suicide within the past year, and in California they must disclose any death within the last three years.

In Australia, material fact laws govern that vendors and real estate agents have to disclose information to buyers that may influence their decision or buy or not. This can be as mundane as body corporate certificates and structural defects, to whether a home has has been subject to natural disasters, such as a flood or a bushfire, and a crime taking place there.

At the end of last year Queensland brought in these laws, coming into line with other states.

“Wow, this is a beautiful home,” the listing for the Colorado house says. “Nothing like this one for sale at this price in the area.”

Records show the home last sold for $US600,000 ($AU921,241) in November 2022.

Built in 2013, the two-storey property has an open-plan layout with granite benchtops in the kitchen and a main family room.

There is a covered front porch and back deck with views of the Colorado Mountains.

The listing states the brown exterior is now white and a new roof was installed in 2023.
