The story of this luxury build starts with a nightmare – a nudist next door – and ends with a $74 million dream home floating on the water.
When the vendors of this extraordinary American estate – now for sale – were in the planning stage, they discovered they had bought land opposite a nudist. It compelled their architect to design a property without as many canal-facing windows, to avoid the peep show being forced on them.
The Florida house, listed for $US49,995,000 ($AU74,669,000), is the result of finding a new block where they were not comprised – and confronted.
Owners Brad and Shona Tuckman engaged leading Miami-based architect Max Strang to check out the canal-front site of their new property, before he drew up a design.
And it was during this reconnaissance that Strang, Tuckerman told prestige news outlet Mansion Global, noticed an exhibitionist neighbour on the opposite side of the waterway. He was in a full state of nature.
So Strang was compelled to design a house that lacked canal-front windows, “because he didn’t want to see the naked guy”, Tuckerman explained to Mansion Global. It is unthinkable that such a position could not be exploited to its beautiful best.
At first the Tuckman family were happy to live in the privacy-protecting, modified design. But when they found another vacant canal-front block in Fort Lauderdale on the market, they realised they could embark on a better design.
They bought the second block and this amazing home is the result, with a design that drinks in vistas of the water, swaying palms and pool.
It is fresh on the US prestige market, following a four-year construction, and skylights and floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors which were once too risky now invite in sunshine and the breeze off the water.
The home is six-bedroom, cantilevered design that seems to float above the water. Strang is known for his take on regional modernism and the sleek lines of this contemporary home speak to that signature.
The enormous outdoor space includes a pickleball court.
Known as the River’s Reach Residence on Strang’s studio website, the project brief details how “vertical fins” providing shading, with dining areas positioned strategically to capture the breeze from the canal and a 1950s vibe thanks to the crisp, minimalist finishes.
There are so many wow moments in this glam estate, not least of all the jaw-dropping view from the garden across the harbour.
The penthouse spans multiple levels, including a rooftop garden with another living zone, which could be repurposed as a bedroom.
There is nothing between this property and the ocean to obscure the vistas that reach from Bronte to Tamarama.
