Finding an ideal family home means more than simply looking for the right house to live in; it’s about the bigger picture, too.
This goes for the overall energy of the suburb, its access to the things you need, and the type of lifestyle it affords.
When it comes to Perth, the inner-western suburb of Nedlands is a win-win choice; one of the city’s oldest suburbs thriving in its established environment, with shady parks, large trees, and character homes, all adding to its appeal.
According to Michelle Kerr, founder and director of DUET Property Group, Nedlands is often referred to as one of the best lifestyle suburbs in Australia, and for valid reasons, being the first suburb from the city, together with its picturesque landscapes that are bound by the scenic Swan River and blissful Kings Park.
“On average, people tend to stay put in Nedlands far longer than in other suburbs, generally keeping the number of available properties very low, and therefore sustaining the high demand,” says Kerr.
“The demographic is heavily weighted to high earning professionals, primarily in the medical, law, and accounting fields, which is unsurprising, considering its only six kilometres from the CBD with very few traffic lights along the way.”
In the latest Domain House Price Report, Nedlands’ median house price rose 14.3 per cent year-on-year to $1.915 million, largely driven by high demand and its proximity to major facilities, attracting buyers searching for an all-encompassing way of life.
“Living in Nedlands means having Perth’s most prestigious high schools within a 10-minute drive from home, along with the University of Western Australia only being four minutes away,” explains Kerr.
“When you layer this with an abundance of recreational resources, including numerous parks and ovals, as well as plenty of local clubs for the keen golfer or yachter – it’s not hard to see why those who move here, stay here.”
As a suburb with all the characteristics that promote a blissful and active lifestyle, it’s no wonder residents such as couple Rosanna Susanto, managing director of Bodyscape, and Chris Wilson, founder of Chris Wilson Fitness Studio, have come to call Nedlands home.
“I opened Bodyscape in 2014, which first began purely as a yoga studio, and has since evolved into a wellness spa, located within a renovated heritage building that was once the Nedlands Post Office,” says Susanto.
“Our intention was to go against the grain of traditional gyms and studios, and instead focus on creating a more contemplative and tranquil space, one that echoed the same sense of sophistication as the suburb in which we practise.”
While most days start with a cardio-focused class at Chris’s gym and end with a grounding Yin Yoga session at Rosanna’s studio, the couple also relishes Nedlands’ natural playground.
“We love to take family walks down the river on the Esplanade with our four-month-old son Hunter, or do cycling loops over the bridges to South Perth and home again,” says Susanto.
“My favourite time of the year is when the nearby Somerville Auditorium transforms into an outdoor cinema, where we have watched many movies under the stars and majestic tree canopy. It’s truly a special place where I intend to raise my growing family for many years to come.”
Completed in 2002, this Federation-style residence was designed to evoke the charms of yesteryear, revealing many classic features of its inspired era, including soaring and ornate ceilings, grand pillars and architraves, jarrah floorboards, and grand verandahs.
