What’s better than Netflix and takeaway pizza? How about expertly made wood-fired pizza watching a movie on the big screen in your own courtyard?

That’s the promise to residents of Mondello Residences in the southern Sydney suburb of Kirrawee. On the last Saturday of every month, a pizza maker from Bondi’s Da Orazio Pizza & Porchetta is due to fire up the communal pizza oven, creating cheesy goodness to share.

The carb-loaded courtyard is the brainchild of celebrity landscaper Jamie Durie and his company, Durie Design. Residents will also be able to book the space – and a pizza maker – for private functions.

McGrath Projects NSW sales manager Luke Hayes says he expects the building to be popular among local owner-occupiers.

“Mondello is trying to create that local community feel that is already very strong in the area,” Hayes says. “We expect a lot of young professionals and first-home buyers to buy in Mondello. They might not be able to quite afford a family home, so they are choosing a nice unit instead.”

Developed by A+ Group with PBD Architects, Mondello has 105 apartments in two four-storey buildings. All were released for sale last weekend.

There has been little new apartment construction in Kirawee in the past few years. Hayes says several new projects are on the drawing board, including one – at the site of the old Kirawee brick pit – that should bring more shops, cafes and restaurants to the area.

Mondello, near the corner of President Avenue and the Princes Highway, is about 450 metres from Kirrawee station. The CBD is 35 minutes away by train.

It’s been about five years since the state government’s urban development agency sold parcels of land around the Potts Hill water reservoir to developers.

One of those pieces of land is set to become a community of 124 apartments in five buildings surrounding central gardens. Tallowood Potts Hill is being developed and built by JSN Hanna, with design by Integrated Design Group.

Apartments include floor-to-ceiling glass doors, stone benchtops and ASKO appliances. Many have bushland or district views. Ed Tancred of JLL says key attractions are likely to be the generous outdoor spaces in many apartments and the surrounding bushland and parks.

Less than 10 minutes’ walk from Coogee beach, Omnia is a boutique block of six apartments. Three have been released for sale: a garden apartment and two first-floor residences. Open-plan interiors flow onto generous outdoor entertaining areas. All bedrooms have built-in wardrobes, with en suites for the master bedrooms.

Finishes include lime-washed stone and freestanding tubs in the bathrooms, Parisi tapware, mother-of-pearl feature tiles, LED lighting and no common walls.

Developer Huss Chalich says the relaxed beach setting is mirrored in the design, “to create homes that are spacious, light-filled and serene, that embrace the abundance of surrounding nature”.
