New horizons: Waking up to a world-class view at Bondi Beach

When a Sydney businessman first bought this stunning Bondi beachfront apartment, he hung on to his Darling Island home just in case he didn’t like living above the sands of the iconic suburb. Now he’s selling – because he’s bought a bigger apartment in the same building.

“I was sceptical at first but I quickly discovered I’d underestimated living at Bondi,” says the owner, who has asked not to be named to safeguard his privacy. “It’s magic and my wife absolutely loves it too.

“Bondi has changed tremendously over the years and I think it’s now probably the most cosmopolitan area of Australia with so many shops, restaurants and cafes; it feels like a bohemian village. And while I’ve had views over the Opera House and bridge on the harbour before, the views from this apartment are far more interesting because it’s always moving – and that energy puts everyone in a good mood.”

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment in The Bondi with stunning views over the beach and ocean covers 242 square metres of space and can be opened up with a series of floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and windows almost completely to the outdoors.

The building has prime position on Campbell Parade originally as the old Bondi Motel which was completely redesigned by PTW Architects into a modern apartment building, with units sold off the plan in 2009.

“It’s stunning,” says Brad Caldwell-Eyles, managing director of agents 1st City. “The wintergarden terrace can be opened up or closed off into another room, and there are multiple open-plan living spaces that are wonderfully flexible.”

The apartment has oak timber floors throughout, a Calacatta marble kitchen with Gaggenau appliances, a huge master bedroom with walk-in robes, a large internal laundry and double parking.

Residents can call down to the 24/7 concierge to have their cars brought up from the garage below, and leave them in a convenient bay to be parked by the concierge too. There are also great areas for studies – although it might be hard to concentrate on anything but that view.
