A new pet-friendly apartment block in Auckland is proving a hit with tenants and their furry friends, and is so far home to 18 dogs, 15 cats and a parrot.

Resido is a new rental-only apartment building in the Mount Wellington area of East Auckland, just 10km from the CBD.

Dubbed New Zealand’s largest build-to-rent project on its completion earlier this year, the building, which is owned by Kiwi Property Group, houses 295 apartments ranging from studios to three-bedders.

But it is the addition of some furry and fluffy residents that is making news in New Zealand.

Among the menagerie of pets that have already taken up residence in the building are 18 dogs, 15 cats and a parrot named Alex, according to OneRoof.

Pets were always part of the plan for the apartment building, which includes a dog park amongst its many amenities.

Resido’s property and leasing manager Caitlin Walker told OneRoof “owning a pet shouldn’t dictate where you can and can’t live.”

“We just wanted to try and make it easier for people and you can still come and live in a beautiful space whether you have a fur baby or a human baby,” Walker said.

According to Resido’s website, each apartment is allowed a maximum of two small pets, which includes dogs up to a combined weight of 25 kilograms, cats, small caged birds and/or fish kept in an aquarium.

However, Walker told OneRoof other requests would be considered on a case-by-case basis, with one person recently inquiring about bringing their pet lizard along.

And while she did not rule out rats, mice and spiders as one day taking up residence there, she said anything that could escape and cause an infestation, breed quickly or make living in Resido less enjoyable for other residents would need to be considered first.
