One of Summer Hill’s most recognisable industrial relics is being transformed into a residential and commercial hub, with the next stage about to hit the market.

The Flour Mill was built in the 1920s, taking advantage of the goods railway line built during World War I.

Fast-forward a century or so and developers EG and Daiwa House are hoping buyers will be drawn to a similar convenience: the new light rail stop, not to mention trains and buses to the CBD seven kilometres away.

Colliers International residential director Ian Bennett says it’s a rare opportunity to own  a piece of the area’s industrial history.

“It’s a one-off,” Bennett says. “Once they’re sold, there aren’t too many more flour mills around.”

The first two stages were launched in late 2014 to a strong reception from buyers, mostly inner-west locals when 127 were sold. Nearly 90 per cent of the residences in the initial release sold on the first day.

The display suite for the next stage, the Malthouse, opens this weekend. The Malthouse is a free-standing, nine-storey building of 98 apartments.

Hassell is the architecture firm behind The Flour Mill.  When complete the development will house 360 apartments, as well as commercial spaces.

Bennett says the project has been popular with first  home buyers, young families and young executives. “We haven’t had as many downsizers or overseas buyers as we have seen in recent developments in some neighbouring suburbs.”

In the final release, also expected this year, buyers will be offered an opportunity to purchase the largest of the apartments in the circular towers of the original wheat silos.

How’s the Serenity? For Buildview Corp, it must be pretty good, because the developer has just launched its third residential development under the Serenity name, this time in Bankstown. There are 60 apartments in total, across two five-storey towers designed by CDArchitects. Half the apartments were offered for sale in this initial release and early this week there were 24 still available. Residences have quartz benchtops, island breakfast bars and secure basement parking. Nearby bus stops offer services to Hurstville, Parramatta, Miranda and Burwood. Bankstown station is one kilometre away. A display suite at Shop 2/433 Chapel Road, Bankstown, is open Saturday and Sunday, from 11am to 1pm, or by appointment.
