For $1.7 million, you can buy one of the strangest houses on the market.

From the outside, 11 Stryd y Castell looks like any other cottage in the historic town of Conwy in North Wales.

With its whitewashed walls, dormer windows and timber door, the house looks appealingly rustic.

But inside, it’s a very different story.

The interior has been kitted out in lavish medieval-style furniture in dark wood and red velvet, giving it the air of a historic castle.

Rich European and Japanese tapestries adorn the walls. In the bedrooms, four-poster beds nestle under five-hundred-year-old roof beams, and stained glass windows cast a gentle glow over the sheets.

But it’s in the bathroom that the biggest surprise is to be found. A giant high-heeled shoe acts as a bathtub, bedazzled with pink and burgundy mosaic tiles.

The tub is designed by Massimiliano Della Monaca, and prices range from $27,000 to $65,000.

The Audrey bathtub is a massive 165 centimetres tall, and 270 centimetres long – longer than a king-sized bed.

A sink shaped like a coffee mug adds to the bathroom’s sense of whimsy.

In another room, a shower is hidden inside a pulpit, and a toilet and sink sit behind confessional doors. You can even wash your hands in a baptismal font.

“This renovation displays a highly individual and visionary taste in certain quarters, extravagant in some respects, yet purposely made to create a home that’s not short on flair, glamour and presence,” the listing by Dafydd Hardy says.

The house is heritage listed and dates back to the sixteenth century. The current owner spent seven years transforming the cottage from a derelict shell to a habitable home.

The cottage had previously spent time as a vicarage, a pig market, and a pub. By the 1970s, it had been abandoned.

The property is on the market for £875,000 ($AU1.75 million).
