One of a kind: Art deco house in Mascot sells for $135,000 over the vendor's reserve

March 7, 2020

It was love at first sight for the buyer of an art deco house in Sydney’s south last weekend, purchasing the home for $135,000 over the vendor’s reserve.

Vendors Anna and Catherine were selling their family home of more than 45 years on behalf of their mother who had gone into aged care. Memories of an endless flow of family and friends in and out of the house coloured their time there, they said ahead of what would be a bittersweet auction.

“We never thought this day would actually come. We thought it would be our family home forever and we’d be passing it on. ” Anna told Your Domain.

“Hopefully it’ll go to a good family that will appreciate it the way we appreciated it,” Catherine said.

“We’ve tried to give it as much love as we can and hopefully that shows and people will fall in love with it and want to buy it.”

The well-loved art deco architecture style is a rare find in Mascot, which has a limited supply of houses to begin with.

The large corner block positioning and the home’s period features were a significant drawcard for buyers at the final inspection before the auction.

Listing agent Andrew Cassar from Raine & Horne Botany who had seen over 100 groups through to inspect, was confident he would get a good result.

“It’s going to sell today. We’re going to have a new owner today,” he told Your Domain.

“This property is very unique. It has a lot of original features right through.

“Leadlight windows, etched doors, original tiled bathroom. It’s a lovely sold brick home that a family can enjoy forever.”

The auctioneer begun by asking for bids of $1.5 million or above. It was all guns blazing from there as two parties bid in increments of $20,000, hitting the reserve of $1.6 million in no time.

A new bidder entered the game at $1.63 million which raised the competition,  but the first bidder had the final say, securing the home for $1.735 million – $135,000 over Anna and Catherine’s reserve.

“It’s surreal – I’m just glad it’s over. I don’t have to do this again so I’m happy.”

“We really love the art deco nature of this house,” the buyer said, who fell in love with the house as soon as she saw it.

Agent Mr Cassar said both the buyers and sellers were extremely happy with the outcome. Photo: Your Domain

“I’m just so happy it’s gone to a lovely family and we couldn’t ask for anything more,”
