If it’s a brick and if it was made in Melbourne during the past 150 years, Paddy Larady will be able to tell you what it is. A hand made Hawthorn? A common pressed red, a cream brick, a clinker, an edge-knocked tumbled brick defined as a “cappuccino” or a “smoked grey”? Or any of the later mass-produced masonry dug from the clay beds around Melbourne and fired into uniform rectangles to become the fabric of our factories, office blocks and houses? Mr Larady can recognise them all.
