Palm Beach: Sydney’s elite are dropping anchor here

Embodying the spirit of the Australian coast, Palm Beach is much treasured by those lucky enough to call the scenic suburb home. Some of the country’s most prestigious real estate resides on this narrow peninsula, with Pittwater, the Pacific Ocean, and Broken Bay providing a picturesque backdrop.

In fact, even after an entire day spent at the beach, the twinkle of the water follows locals home, often viewed from sweeping decks and vast windows. Little wonder why Sydney’s elite are dropping anchor here, no longer just for the weekend or summer, but for good.

Sydney’s seaside sanctuary

Like the locals, principal of LJ Hooker Palm Beach David Edwards refers to it as ‘Palmy’, claiming that outdoor living is a way of life here, where families can fully enjoy the perks of living by the sea.

“Even folks from far-off places dream of living here, capturing the heart with its larger-than-life outdoor lifestyle,” says Edwards. “On land, people enjoy beachside dining, local boutique shopping, hiking trails, and playing rounds of golf, while on water, residents surf, sail, kayak, or simply laze on the beach.”

Edwards predicts that even in a cooling market, demand for Palm Beach will remain strong, continuing its shift from catering primarily to weekenders into a desirable place to make a sea change, where a 45-minute drive or a quick seaplane can have you in the city.

“In recent years, we are seeing affluent families who now have fewer ties to the CBD flock to the area to embrace its natural beauty,” explains Edwards. “This, together with a growing number of investment buyers who recognise the suburb’s great return for holiday rentals.”

Partly responsible for the iconic floating house on the glistening waters of Palm Beach, Chuck Anderson is the designer and co-owner of Lilypad Palm Beach, a modern and entirely off-grid apartment available for exclusive stays and intimate events.

“I grew up in the waters of Palm Beach, learning how to sail little boats with my family, and while we didn’t live there, we had access to it through the waterways,” says Anderson. “I think this is what makes this exclusive part of Sydney so special; you see the biggest of the big shots throwing a ball for their dog with their toes in the sand, next to a young family of four sharing fish and chips.”

Anderson describes his perfect day as waking up on Lilypad with his wife, diving straight into the water, then stepping into the onboard sauna, before rinsing off in the outdoor shower and heading to shore for coffee and banana bread at The Boathouse.

“People here relish a shared escapism that puts you at ease, with a waterway that rivals the best in the world, and the myriad ways to experience it,” adds Anderson. “It’s also a place that is one road in and one road out, and this, too, only adds to its secluded magic.”
