The notion of chasing an endless summer may seem cliched, but for residents of Parap in the Northern Territory, this is simply the way of life.

Located a mere five-minute drive from Darwin’s city centre, this multicultural inner suburb bids farewell to winters and crowds and says hello to the Top End’s laid-back tropical lifestyle.

Parap offers families an idyllic place to call home; one where Darwin’s vibrant centre, sea breeze and famous sunsets are only ever a hop, skip and jump away, and where large, modern houses are bound by lush tropical gardens and a backyard swimming pool is almost guaranteed.

“Although properties rarely list in the area, there’s certainly always a high demand for homes in Parap, [which is] becoming one of Darwin’s most desirable and high-end suburbs,” says Sascha Smithett of Real Estate Central.

Parap’s popularity is no accident. It boasts a proud and strong community that takes pleasure in its amenities, including a local primary school, a childcare centre and a swimming pool.

What’s more, a quick drive could have you at the likes of East Point Reserve, Mindil beach, the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens and the Darwin Sailing Club.

“We are seeing more young people moving into this area to take advantage of these sought-after amenities,” Smithett says. “It’s an ever-evolving thriving suburb where many chic young couples and families blend in with long-term Darwin residents.”

Diversity is at the heart of Parap’s makeup. It’s not only home to the Larrakia people – the traditional owners of the Darwin region – but is also home to many South-East Asian and Torres Strait Islander communities. This rich diversity is celebrated with pride each Saturday morning at the Parap Village Market.

“A visit to the markets is an essential part of a local’s weekend routine and is a real explosion of the senses,” says Darwin resident Genevieve Badge. “You can spend an entire day enjoying wonderful music, discovering great art and gems, and eating multicultural food.”

Previously a Sydneysider, Badge is now the manager of the Parap Village Market, proudly helping to run the weekly event that brings the village to life.

“I came here for a holiday two years ago, went home to Sydney and thought, ‘Actually, I want to go back’,” Badge recalls. “Jumping out of the rat race and into a more relaxed way of life was a huge and welcomed change – the people here are always happy and friendly, with the sun shining for most of the year.”
