A 180-year-old mansion in Tasmania that’s straight out of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ could be yours for a bargain price.
Huntingfield House is just 15 minutes south of Hobart, but it feels a world away from the hustle and bustle.
The imposing sandstone estate was first built nearly two centuries ago by James Baynton, a local landowner and farmer.
With its classic double-fronted facade and sturdy sandstone walls, it is a prime example of Georgian-style architecture.
There is even a paved circular carriage drive in front of the house where guests would have arrived in horse-drawn carts in the property’s heyday.
“Without a doubt, this property deserves the title of one of Kingborough Municipality’s most significant heritage-listed homes,” said agent Mandy Welling from Exceed Property.
Despite its rich history, the house is currently on the market for offers over just $1.5 million.
It most recently changed hands in 2020, when the owners of 20 years sold the house for $2 million.
Since then, the property has been on and off the market. It was relisted for sale at its current asking price in October 2024.
There is plenty of grandeur and period charm on offer at Huntingfield House.
On the ground floor is a rustic living room with original stone walls, heavy flagstone floors, and a grand Cheminees Philippe fireplace hailing from France.
Off the living room is a large stone storage room that Welling suggests could be “perfect for an extensive wine cellar”.
The bright, airy kitchen blends modern finishes with period details – including several exquisite wood-panelled sash windows dating back to the 1830s or 1840s.
Upstairs are six large bedrooms spread over two storeys. Many of the bedrooms boast Victorian fireplaces with ornate timber surrounds.
The bedrooms are serviced by a large family bathroom with a deep soaking tub.
Outdoors, there are around 2.2 acres of gardens with olive trees, a vegetable patch, stables, and even an old well.
“Can you see yourself as this remarkable property’s caretaker?” the listing asks.
“Take a stroll through the property’s grounds, down to the stable, across to the well and back around the marvel at this palatial home, all the while realising how lucky you are to be its new owner.”
