Prahran: The inner-city 'mixed bag' offering a home for all

Charismatic, coveted and cosmopolitan, Prahran epitomises Melbourne’s much-loved eclectic nature, lending to its rightly earned, highly sought-after status.

It’s where the CBD transitions into the suburbs, located next to stylish South Yarra and effortlessly cool Windsor, and only a hop, skip and a jump from the sands of St Kilda beach.

Yet, despite its popular neighbours, this vibrant inner-city community offers more than enough for residents to fill their social cups locally.

According to Carla Fetter, director of Jellis Craig Stonnington, Prahran is a real “mixed bag” for the better, with residents fitting all sorts of demographics – inner-city workers, affluent families and young creatives.

All of them contribute to the area’s overall aesthetic.

“For professionals, the suburb’s proximity to the city and accessible public transport make it ideal, while families can enjoy access to many highly renowned schools, including Our Lady of Lourdes and Wesley College,” Fetter says.

“Everything is within easy reach, which is why it is one of the best places to live in Melbourne.”

Mainly comprising Victorian and Edwardian homes, with the occasional modern dwelling in between, the suburb’s house prices have consistently risen over the years.

As shown by the latest Domain House Price Report, Prahran’s median sits at $1.75 million, up 6.8 per cent year-on-year.

“It basically has no shortcomings as a suburb,” Fetter says.

“You’ve got the Hawksburn Village and Victoria Gardens, plus cafes like Hobba and restaurants such as Bistro Thierry, with countless stores that include one of my personal favourites, Fenton & Fenton.”

Further cementing the suburb’s reputation as one of the city’s premier foodie destinations, the iconic Prahran Market is a Melbourne institution.

“For the past 155 years, the market has provided residents and visitors access to healthy, fresh, and locally produced foods,” says general manager, company secretary and long-time resident Simon Ward.

Having grown up in the country, Ward is familiar with how passionate and engaged primary producers are with their products. This fuels his hunger to champion the traders of Prahran Market, as well as the makers found throughout the neighbourhood.

“I love to have breakfast and a long black or espresso at Oltre, a new cucina at the market, followed by browsing through the retail and commercial stores that make up the entire 2.5-kilometre length of Chapel Street,” he says.
