Sydneysider Ron recently purchased an off-the-plan terrace in the city’s south-west to make the most of government initiatives available to first-home buyers.

“By my calculations I’ve saved between $50,000 to $60,000,” he told Domain’s Property Unpacked podcast this week.

“I was able to get the HomeBuilder grant and stamp duty concession but wasn’t eligible for the First Home Deposit Scheme. I’m looking at getting the Deposit Scheme when the build finalises next year.”

Last week, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg handed down the long-awaited federal budgetThe extension of the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme was the big ticket item for the housing and construction industry, with the government extending the scheme to an extra 10,000 first-home buyers this financial year.

It will allow first-home buyers like Ron to continue to make savings purchasing their first home.

Also in this week’s episode of the podcast, we unpack the results of Domain’s Rent Report for the September quarter. To wrap things up, west-coast contestants Jasmin & Luke from The Block chat about their time on the show.
