If you’re looking for a caffeine fix in Pullenvale, you’re in for a treat.

Parked up in the grounds of the historical Pullenvale Hall each weekday morning is the Curious Caravan, aka vintage gem “Peggy Sue”, where you can pick up a coffee, cakes and light bites.

You might bump into a neighbour, or you might have a park bench all to yourself, but either way, the peaceful views across the paddocks over the surrounding treetops to the mountains beyond are sure to get your day off to a good start.

Hall at the heart

Pullenvale resident Bree Pullinger, an interior stylist and mum to Tora, 10, and Zahra, 7, says the hall is a wonderful meeting place for the locals.

Billed as “a venue for every occasion”, it’s been at the centre of community life for nearly 80 years.

You can pop in for yoga, personal training or kids’ dance classes, or roll up for Friday night drinks and catch a visit from a pizza truck.

There are movie nights, monthly Old Time dance nights, and the market day is also a monthly event.

Pullinger grew up in a small town and says moving to Pullenvale five years ago has been the “destresser” she and husband Warwick desperately needed.

“We lived in Jindalee where everyone was on top of each other, and we knew it was time to have some space,” she says.

“As you’re driving out through the western suburbs, the blocks get bigger and bigger, and when you drive over our hills, your shoulders automatically come down. There’s nothing but a school and a hall, paddocks, horses, cows and houses. It’s a lovely spot to showcase what a good, old-fashioned upbringing can be like in this fast-moving world.”

It’s the peace and quiet that draws young families to the area, says Brisbane Real Estate agent Kel Goesch.

“The biggest attraction for families is the lifestyle it offers: it’s a rural, countrified lifestyle without sacrificing convenience,” he says.

“You’re still within 30 minutes of the city and airports and within a few minutes’ drive of the local shopping centre.”

Nature on doorstep

Needless to say, you don’t move to Pullenvale for the shopping.

There are biking, hiking and horse riding, forests that are home to deer, kangaroos and other wildlife, big gardens to maintain and chooks and vegies to tend to.

“It’s the quiet life, which we love,” says Pullinger.

“It’s 100 per cent private and quiet. The girls love it, and they’re at an age when they’re starting to realise what it’s like to live in such a special little spot. When we head down to the coast, they can’t wait to get back home.”
