Heartbreakingly beautiful, awash with luminous coastlines and bathed with a lush hinterland that morphs into jungle in the tropical north, Queensland is a state more akin to a romance novel that’s sparking a love affair among prestige buyers.

It’s an amorous affair that’s driving property prices to record heights, with the honeymoon expected to reach a crescendo this summer when borders re-open and release a fresh wave of love-struck buyers.

And the timing couldn’t be better.

From a Sanctuary Cove hideaway to a French chateau in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and a palatial retreat perched high over the Coral Sea – three of the state’s most romantic homes are now on the market, and their facades alone could make the fussiest protagonist swoon.

Commanding one of Queensland’s most prestigious ocean views from an elevated 2821-square-metre parcel of the Whitsundays, property number one is the architectural masterpiece oozing opulence at Hayman East, Hayman Island.

On the market for $7.7 million, and featuring a heat-regulated infinity pool that looks over the Great Barrier Reef, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom “private paradise” envelopes a level of luxury that the selling agent, Carol Carter of Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty, says not only encapsulates romance, but the best the nation’s eastern seaboard can offer in exclusivity.

“There are a few reasons this home is special and one is the total privacy … then there are the views. They are just stunning and it blows you away every time you go up there,” Carter says.

“But you also have resort facilities at your fingertips, so even if you want to have a romantic dinner for two it can all be arranged with a private chef while looking at that view.”

And interest, she says, has been nothing short of immense from prestige buyers across the nation and the globe.

“What we’re seeing is a new wave of Australians who traditionally may have travelled overseas for their annual holidays or those who are taking advantage of the closed borders and venturing to see a part of Australia they have never seen before,” Carter says.

“And Hayman is in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. There is tremendous value in just that fact alone … and when people realise how truly magnificent it is, they want to be more invested in the lifestyle.

“I do also believe we’ll have a rush once those borders open because we have several people waiting to get back here.”

Second on the list – and occupying a 1500-square-metre parcel of the exclusive Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast – is the breathtaking 5927 Turnbury Terrace.

The five-bedroom house has mesmerising views and a Hamptons charm that melds with the elite aesthetic of the estate, says selling agent Glenys Pitkin of Harcourts Coastal Paradise Point.

“It feels as though it floats … you’ve got these two lakes [in front] and the house is projected forward and it’s just gorgeous. There’s a lot of hand-laid stone, and all the bathrooms are marble,” she says.

“I think in terms of romance, it’s the fact that the home flows so well and it’s got two big master suites. The gardens are sensational as well.”

The home is priced at “interest above $5 million”.

Further north, and wrapping up the romantic trio, is the Charmant chateau at 200 Ocean View Road, Ocean View, in the heart of one of Queensland’s most picturesque hinterland pockets.

As though lifted from the Brittany countryside, the exquisite estate, priced at $4.2 million to $4.5 million, harks back to old-world France while capturing breathtaking views of the Glass House Mountains and the Sunshine Coast.

Co-selling agent Nigel Statham, of Ray White Dayboro, says the sheer romance of the four-hectare estate makes it a journey rather than mere bricks and mortar, while a shallow moat and a balcony seductively perched off a tower give it a Shakespearean appeal.

“I think it’s the quality that actually makes it so romantic. Properties with a bit of a theme can miss the mark but this one doesn’t,” he says.

“The kitchen is the kind of place you can just imagine making this big meal in … but I think the most romantic feature has to be the courtyard. It’s just beautifully done.”
