Rabbitohs fullback Latrell Mitchell has snapped up a riverfront estate on the NSW Mid North Coast, splashing more than $1.8 million on the regional property at auction on Saturday.
The NRL star outbid two other interested parties to walk away with the keys to a six-bedroom property, on more than 19 hectares of land, in his home town of Taree.
“I nearly hit the roof when I got the announcement that we got it, I was over the moon,” the 23-year-old told Domain, noting he was still half asleep in his Sydney home at the time.
“We had a good win [against the Broncos on Thursday night], and this tops it off,” he said.
The property, his second in the Taree region, will be a home for his parents Matt and Trish Mitchell, with Latrell to visit when he can get away from Sydney.
“I wanted to get a house … I have 600 acres up there, but the fires went through it and burned the shack up there. I wanted something to come home to when I can.”
Bidding on the property started at $1.55 million, with two of the three registered bidders making offers. A vendor bid was also made at the reserve price of $1.75 million, with the home going on to sell for $1,815,000.
Josh Smith, from Smith Property Group, and Latrell’s business manager Nathan McCullum, of McCullum Advisory, attended the auction to act for the NRL player, with property sold through Steve Smith, of Ray White Manning Valley.
Mr Smith said the vendors, who were selling to downsize, were very pleased with the result.
Latrell hopes to run some cattle on the property, and already has 14-head of cattle on his property in Caffreys Flat.
It was an emotional morning for Mr Mitchell who said his son had worked hard both on and off the field to buy the new family home.
“The family has come home to the heart of the country,” he said. “This show Latrell’s continued commitment to family and to Taree, Biripi country.”
Back in Sydney, fellow NRL player Victor Radley sold his Bondi Beach pad for $1.97 million at auction.
The born and bred Bondi local was 20 when he bought the two-bedroom spread as a first home for $1.2 million just a year after he made his NRL debut for the Roosters. Now 23, Radley, known to the club’s fans as “Victor the Inflictor”, has upgraded to a semi in the area
Ten registered bidders turned out for the auction of the two-bedroom apartment on Saturday, with the bidding opening on the $1.55 million reserve price.
The bidding climbed mostly in $20,000 and $10,000 increments, with eight active bidders pushing the price $420,000 above the reserve.
The unit sold through Jason Boon, of Richardson & Wrench, and was snapped up by parents buying the unit for their adult children.
The home was initially listed with a guide of $1.3 to 1.4 million, which was revised up to $1.5 million throughout the campaign.
