One of the most expensive penthouses in Manhattan has hit the market with a rare bonus.

On the roof terrace is a glittering, mosaic-tiled swimming pool with views over the Hudson River.

At 18.5 metres long by 3 metres wide, it’s believed to be the biggest private outdoor pool in New York City.

David Weinreb, a real estate tycoon and co-founder of Howard Hughes Corp, is the owner of the property.

He initially listed the apartment in 2021 as an unfinished shell, asking just under $US50 million ($72 million).

After ten months without a bite, Weinreb took the listing down and finished the build himself.

“I believed in the design and knew that completing it was the right thing for the home,” he wrote in an email to the Wall Street Journal.

The penthouse is now back on the market with an asking price of $US75 million ($117 million).

The rooftop lap pool is not the only luxury feature in this state-of-the-art penthouse.

Celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten was brought in to design Weinreb’s “dream kitchen”, which comes with a Gaggenau espresso machine, steam oven and wine cabinet.

Throughout the home, soaring 5.4-metre windows offer uninterrupted views of the city’s most iconic landmarks, from the Empire State Building to the Statue of Liberty.

There are five bedrooms and six bathrooms spread throughout the 600-square-metre apartment.

In the main bedroom is a “spa-calibre” ensuite with a steam shower and twin Italian marble vanities.

For those hesitant to bathe in full view of the city, there is no need to worry – all of the windows are fitted with motorised blinds.

Listing agents Clayton Orrigo and Stephen Ferrara of Compass are billing the penthouse as “the crown jewel of downtown”.

“Every element has been thoughtfully considered, resulting in a residence that is as functional as it is refined – a truly exceptional home in the heart of Manhattan,” the listing reads.
