A private island located just 90 minutes’ drive from Canberra has gone on the market.
Wade Island on Lake Burrinjuck, beside the historic village of Wee Jasper, is set to go under the hammer in early May.
The 91 hectare island is untouched by the elements of human civilisation.
With rolling hills and abundant greenery, the island is accessible by a land bridge when the water is low enough but mostly requires access via boat.
According to LJ Hooker Dickson sales agent, Nic Salter-Harding, it’s the perfect place to set up an eco tourism village.
“The zoning and the size of the island offers the possibility for a tourist park,” he said.
“The lake is used extensively for fishing and watersports.”
The island last sold more than 10 years ago for less than $500,000, and Mr Salter-Harding said people will be surprised at the eventual selling price.
“There’s no comparable sale in Australia so it’s quite hard to answer what the price will be,” he said.
“The potential price of the property is broadly appealing because it’s within what I consider to be in most people’s budgets if you are looking to buy somewhere like Canberra or Sydney.”
The current owners bought the island with the intention of adding cabins and creating a holiday destination.
“Life got in the way and they never ended up doing it,” said Mr Salter-Harding
“For someone who could be more focused on the land you could do beautiful things with it.”
The island will be auctioned on Wednesday, May 2, at 6pm at the LJ Hooker projects office in City Walk, Canberra.
“The auction campaign is going a little bit longer because the property is so unusual,” added Mr Salter-Harding.
