A woman has revealed how she and her family are living in fear of a stranger who continually sneaks into their home.
She explains the person – or persons – have never caused harm, but clearly want to make it known they have been in the house. They believe someone has entered more than once while the husband was sleeping on the couch.
The woman took to Reddit to share the spooky experience, garnering more than 1000 comments of comfort and advice. She has since deleted the original post, after it went viral, but the UK’s The Mirror reports it in full.
She divulged online, according to the newspaper: “This has happened four times that we know of.
“Last winter, my partner was home alone. He was in the back of the house sleeping, when he woke up freezing cold. He went to investigate and found our kitchen door wide open. This happened 3x, twice in one night and again on a different night. He was home alone each time.
“Most recently, he, I & the kids had left the house for the playground around noon. We stayed about an hour. When we got back, he and I were chatting as we walked into the house. We turned the corner into our living room and both immediately froze. Our living room entrance was wide open.
“Our living room entrance is technically the ‘main’ entrance, but we NEVER use it. It stays dead-bolted and the knob stays locked. It takes a bit of effort to get the deadbolt turned & door open; because the door frame tends to swell. Our kids wouldn’t have been able to open it at all, especially without us noticing.”
She explains that no belongings are ever missing or “disturbed”, although there are valuables in plain sight throughout the house.
Creepily, her children have told her they hear knocks at the door, but when they go to answer, nobody is there.
The family have dogs who are protective of the home, but their behaviour has become unusual, she says.
On one occasion, they were behaving sheepishly when the family returned from an outing, and take a long time to return to the property when they venture off for a walk. The terrified woman is suspicious they are being fed, given treats and “disarmed” by someone who wants the dogs to be familiar and accepting of them.
Responses in the thread urged her to take swift and serious action.
“Call the cops and file a report. Have them check basement/crawl spaces and attic in case someone is living in the house without you knowing,” one said, adding that they should set up cameras, smart sensor lights and alarms as soon as possible.
Another recommended trimming trees and vegetation to enable better visibility and putting Apple tags on the dogs to see where they roam to.
One comment said the intruder was possibly doing it for a thrill.
“I don’t want you alarm you, but you are at least three incidents behind on your reaction time,” they wrote.
“My father was a burglary investigator for his police apartment (a large east coast department) and said that for many of his suspects the thrill of being in someone’s house was more important than stealing, many were really mentally messed up, and burglary was a gateway crime…
“If you suspect someone has been creeping around inside and outside your house (with your daughter home alone!) you need to take it very seriously.”
The home has the peace of mind of an auto-double garage, through which to enter the property.
By the bay and a statement in style, the home comes with CCTV.
The design of the modern, family-sized home has incorporated a security side entry.
