Cradled by Western Port and pristine nature reserves, Somers sits tucked away in the serene lap of the Mornington Peninsula. Its semi-secluded location ensures that it remains a tranquil retreat despite Melbourne being about an hour’s drive away.

From its beginning, the town’s natural splendour and village-like character made Somers a sought-after haven for holidaymakers and an ideal home for those who value a quieter lifestyle.

With a population just shy of 2000, Somers presents a delightful blend of quaint beach shacks and grand residences along the coveted beachfront, though no matter the dwelling, residents indulge in the epitome of beachside living.

The heartbeat of the village

Jackie Wright of The Coast Real Estate, proudly calls Somers home. She treasures the coastal life and has played a role in selling some of the town’s most spectacular homes. During lockdown, she recalls a surge of interest in her village.

“I think people sat at their computers and thought about where an hour’s drive from Melbourne could take them, and Somers popped up,” she says. “But Somers is more than just beaches and community. It offers renowned wineries, superb dining, coastal trails, vibrant farmers markets, and much more.”

While many towns pride themselves on a laid-back atmosphere, Somers genuinely embodies this spirit. Wright shares that locals cherish the lack of home postal deliveries, opting to collect their mail themselves.

“Why have your mail delivered when you can drop into the local post office to collect it, catch up with familiar faces while you’re there, and perhaps have a morning coffee at the General Store next door?”

Where nature sparks creativity

Visual artist Lizzie Alsop draws her inspiration from Somers’ unspoiled beauty. She crafts modern artwork from her home-based studio, taking cues from the region’s flora and the ocean’s gifts she finds during her coastal walks.

“Moving here 15 years ago rekindled my love for painting,” says Alsop. “We were enticed by its promise of an idyllic lifestyle that was still conveniently close to the city, my husband’s workplace, and not as developed as other Mornington Peninsula areas.”

Alsop says her children flourished here, attending the local school, taking sailing lessons at the yacht club, and playing tennis at the local courts.

“In Somers, children experience an enriching upbringing, while adults embrace life’s simple pleasures,” she says. “Be it a refreshing ocean swim, leisurely cafe visits, a trip to the Emu Plains Market, or exploring a nearby vineyard – life is simply delightful.”
