Canberra architecture is a wonderful amalgam of ideas – some that evolved in response to our local environment while others were borrowed from the old world.
Bill Lyristakis of Berkely Residential, who lists this week’s Forrest feature property, says the Tennyson Crescent residence would be at home in any European setting.
“The home has a stately style that evokes the feelings of the grand country residences, and that classic European influence has certainly continued throughout its interiors,” he says.
Lyristakis says meticulous attention to detail is the key to its success.
“Character features fill the residence, and they combine to create a feeling of a classic European style,” he says.
That’s evident from its rich timber and tiled floors, deep skirtings, French doors, bespoke bookcases, detailed panelling, ceiling roses, raw silk curtains, antique chandeliers and gorgeous fountain.
Sonja McAuliffe of Archertec Interiors says European themes strongly influence many client briefs.
“I’m often asked to evoke Tuscan, Mediterranean or Parisian styles when clients are seeking to inject an European influence,” she says.
“I’m working on a project right now to create a Tuscan theme in a bedroom suite.”
McAuliffe says the key is a layered, earthy and rich combination that evokes history and sophistication.
“I created a palette of warm earthy tones, infused with terracotta and golden colours,” she says. “That included aged, dark walnut wood, iron black details, metallic gold accents in tapware, and rich jewel-like colours in tiles, along with velvet fabrics and carpets in dark golds, greens and blues.”
Consider wrought iron, aged timber furniture and light fittings, terracotta, marble, natural or weathered materials, sun-filled colours (ochre, red) or dark wood. Heavy fabrics such as linen and jacquard velvets.
Details often focus on architectural embellishments such as ornate wall moulding, frames, corbelling and cornices. Think light and classical, soft white/neutral colour palettes, parquetry flooring, marble details, fireplaces and gilded mirrors.
Similar to Tuscan interiors, but more casual and modern; a lighter feel, with similar accents, natural materials, and feature colours. It is a more informal, coastal-based inspiration with an indoor-outdoor living focus.
Few local homes have such an imposing, grand presence as Waterford in its dress circle Forrest location.
It’s like arriving at a grand English manor or French chateau as the imported steel gates slide open to reveal immaculate hedging, lush landscaping and a classic fountain feature. All of that on 1861 square metres of prized Forrest earth.
Waterford is a stately, two-storey residence of some 500 square metres with a trained ivy exterior and a columned Georgian-style entry.
That leads into a welcoming foyer. One wing comprises the main bedroom suite and a library, while the central zone offers a formal lounge and formal dining. The balance contains the family room, casual meals area and kitchen.
It’s all brought to life with the injection of European styling through mouldings and cornices, timber and tiled floors, and inspired “dressing” choices, including antique chandeliers, raw silk curtains and floor coverings.
The large formal living room is highlighted by an open fireplace with a marble mantle and French doors leading onto a terrace.
The kitchen has a country vibe with custom joinery, Calacatta marble tops and Miele appliances, including twin ovens, a microwave, and a double fridge-freezer.
Upstairs are three more bedrooms, a multipurpose room and a Juliet balcony overlooking the front garden.
Outside, there’s a choice of outdoor terraces, private spaces, and a welcoming heated swimming pool.
A four-car garage also houses a wine cellar and further storage options.
