New Farm

This huge six-bedroom Federation home, Elystan House, makes quite the first impression and is a much loved landmark amongst New Farm locals. I’m not a New Farm local but I have driven past this stately home and wondered what lay beyond those wrought iron gates and impressive gabled entry. The leadlight windows are perfectly intact, the master walk-in robe deserves a standing ovation and, for the most part, the home is tastefully furnished – red plastic kitchen stools aside.

The exquisitely landscaped garden is a selling point on its own, but we do need to talk about the backyard sculpture. It’s a bit weird, isn’t it? I don’t mind weird but this is weird in an unnecessary way and the house isn’t otherwise quirky enough to warrant it. The grounds are already superb so it’s like putting too much makeup on flawless skin, it’s better without it. It’s a minor niggle given the overall magnificence of the property. If only I had a spare few million lying about.

Petrie Terrace

Respectfully restored: 256 Petrie Terrace, Petrie Terrace. Photo: Supplied

The incredible detail adorning the front facade of ‘Florence House’ on Petrie Terrace sets the tone for this respectfully restored circa 1875 Victorian mansion. I love that the interior hasn’t been “tarted up” to appeal to a broad market, as doing so can border on pedestrian. Rather, many original features have been restored or reinstated to ensure the home is in keeping with its original intent.  That said, I would find it difficult to live with the high-gloss, black tiles. They are cold underfoot and cold to look at. The bamboo blinds throughout are also disappointing. They are neither functional nor attractive and have got to go. It’s also a shame about the pokey bathroom. A house of this stature is worthy of a special bathroom space. All in all, I could definitely get cosy in this grand home so this property has me sold.

Spring Hill

383 Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill QLD

Eccentric: 383 Gregory Terrace, Spring Hill. Photo: Supplied

There is a little bit of crazy happening in this heritage-restored Spring Hill home. The exterior suggests a refined, sophisticated interior, which for the most part it is. But there are these wacky, orange and red curtains framing an otherwise polished and pared-back living room. I don’t mind a dose of crazy so I’m intrigued. Then there is the red room with its red and yellow striped window pelmet and red chandelier. I think red should only be used by experienced designers to avoid a space like this living room, dare I say it.

This home has been decorated in a way that doesn’t comply with trends but instead is completely running its own race, which I love. A buyer with an eccentric, creative streak will most likely snap up this property. If not, I imagine all the window dressings will be shown the door.
