During a time when many people are asking themselves if they should make a move to an idyllic countryside or stay plugged into the buzz of the city, the splendid town of Stirling affords a third option – the beauty of having both.
Nestled in the scenic Adelaide Hills, this whimsical and wondrous town has rolling green vistas, tree-lined streets and a timeless village charm, all while being just 15 minutes from the CBD.
Arabella Hooper, property consultant at Harris Real Estate, says it’s no wonder that many from the east coast are making a home in the Hills, particularly with remote working becoming the new norm.
“Since the pandemic hit, we have seen more executive families move to Stirling seeking the type of seclusion and privacy afforded in its lavish parcels of land,” Hooper says.
“A typical property can range anywhere between 2000 to 8000 square metres, often consisting of stunning stone cottages and mansions, made perfect by romantic English gardens and century-old trees – there’s certainly a true sense of solitude to be found here.”
As reported in the latest Domain House Price Report, Stirling’s median of $1.01 million is up 17.6 per cent year-on-year, and while Hooper notes how stock levels are at an all-time low, she predicts demand will only become stronger.
“I don’t think there’s another location in the country where you can get a bit of everything in such close proximity to a capital city,” she says.
“The most prestigious private schools, like Seymour College, Scotch College and Mercedes College, are all within a 10-minute drive, the magical Mount Lofty Botanic Garden can be reached within five minutes, plus highly acclaimed pubs such as the Stirling Hotel are all within walking distance – all of these factors contribute to Stirling’s growing demand and value.”
Contributing to the town’s appeal is the unique restaurant offering of Patch Kitchen & Garden.
It’s set in one of Stirling’s most historic buildings on Mount Barker Road, otherwise known as Stirling Village.
“I opened Patch in 2014, and it has since become known for serving seasonal, wholesome and delicious food, which can be enjoyed from our wonderful outdoor areas and rambling gardens,” says the owner, Ben Barnett, who lives in Stirling with his partner, Gemma Munro, after relocating from a neighbouring village in 2020.
“We chose to live in Stirling because, while it’s only 15 minutes from the city, we often feel like we live in another world.”
Together with their blended families, Barnett and Dr Munro live in a beautiful 1900s sandstone villa with incredible English grounds set on the highest peak of Stirling.
Dr Munro is able to work with colleagues from around the world from the comfort of a little stone studio located at the bottom of their garden.
“In our minds, Stirling is one of the most stunning suburbs in Australia,” Barnett says.
“Originally it was filled with summer residences for the wealthy to escape the heat of the Adelaide Plains, so there are these deciduous European trees which create incredible beauty in autumn.
“It’s also the gateway to the Adelaide Hills, which in our opinion, is as close as you can get to heaven on earth.”
Originally built in around 1910, St Marks is a landmark sandstone estate; embraced by romantic, meandering gardens reminiscent of an English country home.
While perfectly enhanced for modern living, the charms of yesteryear are proudly on full display.
