Portuguese Supermodel Sara Sampaio is the latest in a growing list of celebrities buying into the confusing yet undeniably lucrative world of digital property ownership in the metaverse.
The former Sports Illustrated and Victoria’s Secret model has dropped a veritable fortune on a digital island getaway in The Sandbox metaverse.
Sampaio paid 25 Ethereum (ETH) for the non-tangible asset, which works out to be almost $110,000.
Sold through the website Exclusible, which describes itself as a “premium, curated NFT marketplace”, Sampaio’s digital property was one of 25 unique islands being offered in Exclusible’s exclusive archipelago.
Other notable non-fungible tokens (NFT) island purchasers reportedly include professional tennis players Stanislas ‘Stan’ Wawrinka and Ana Ivanovic, along with Paris Saint-Germain FC football player Marco Verratti.
A small number of the digital islands were also offered to social media influencers with at least one million followers, which gives you a good indication of who’s buying these questionable assets.
The throng of private islands are said to be located close by to Snoop Dogg’s digital digs, which are also located in The Sandbox’s version of the metaverse.
Although 25 ETH is a relatively small amount of coin to millionaires like Sampaio, the supermodel will be hoping this investment pays off slightly better than her most recent property transaction in the real world.
The 30-year-old has just lost more cash than she splashed on her crypto island, selling her plush three-bedroom apartment in Manhattan’s vogue East Village for $3.65 million and losing a sizeable $150,000 in the process.
