Perched between the iconic Bondi and Coogee beaches, Tamarama may not roll off the tongue as well as its widely known neighbours, but make no mistake; this small beachside suburb is a quiet achiever with an identity of its own.
From dawn to dusk, Australians’ affinity for the outdoors is on full display in this coveted coastal gem.
Bronzed bodies pound the pavement along the scenic coastal walk, while Tamarama Park spills gracefully down to the beach and attracts locals soaking up the sun, surfing the waves, and basking in its laid-back ambience.
Simon Exleton of Pillinger real estate – a major sponsor of the Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club – has lived here for many years and loves the idyllic lifestyle.
“Imagine waking up to a red sunrise, heading out for a morning swim or surf, yoga or run on the sand, coffee and breakfast at M Deli Cafe, all before grabbing the mail,” he says.
“Then, picture an early dinner in Bondi before strolling home to the sound of the surf – that’s Sydney at its finest.”
Tamarama is home to a bevy of film and media personalities, earning it the nickname Glamarama.
Hinting at this glam is last year’s sale of 31 Gaerloch Avenue, which sold for $45 million and set a price record for Sydney’s eastern beaches.
“In the first quarter of 2024, I achieved record-breaking prices between $18 million and $30 million for properties on Kenneth Street, Thompson Street and Gaerloch Avenue,” Exleton says.
“Tamarama proves itself time and time again as a superior capital growth suburb due to its high yields in a tightly held market.”
Kieran Birchall, the founder of My Flower Man, adds a vibrant touch to the neighbourhood. His hybrid florist-cafe has become a beloved local fixture.
“My business began to grow rapidly, so when I stumbled across this little hole in the wall in Tamarama, smack bang in the middle of Fletcher Street, I saw it as a space to call our own,” Birchall says.
“One small renovation later, the business has cultivated a close-knit community that now feels like family.”
Birchall’s store aesthetic mimics Tamarama’s understated beauty, the type that’s also reflected in the suburb’s hidden gem, Mackenzies Bay.
Typically a rocky outcrop, the surf sometimes recedes to expose a stunning sandy beach, much to the delight of those in the know.
“It only appears every few years, making it a magical time for our residents,” Birchall says.
“There’s a unique balance here – Bondi can be a wild ride, while Tama is calm and grounded, yet still close to all the excitement.”
