Renting made headlines in 2023 as prices hit record levels that pinched hard and the vacancy rate tightened in turn.

Tenants on the lookout had some intriguing addresses to inspect including Sydney’s smallest house, a single’s paradise, and a townhouse in the legendary John Farnham’s family.

These are the out-of-the-ordinary rentals of 2023.

A house understood to be Sydney’s smallest became a rental after selling for a huge sum.

The stylish inner-city terrace with a nanoscopic footprint of 25 square metres was listed for $995-per-week through BresicWhitney Inner East, after selling for $1.5 million, and is now being leased with a deposit taken.

Going under the hammer on February 9, the huge sum for 21 Little Riley Street in Surry Hills makes it one of Australia’s most expensive plots of real estate ever.

For context, the median price per square metre for a Sydney house at the time of the deal was $2,466, according to Domain’s research.

Rob Farnham, rock musician and the son of the legendary John Farnham, rented out his luxurious Melbourne townhouse.

The muso originally put the three bedder at 10 Albert Place in Richmond to auction on September 17 2023, with an asking price of $1.6 million to $1.7 million, at the launch of the campaign.

After the three-bedroom, inner-city property failed to sell at auction, it became a rental that was speedily snapped up.

A studio rental on the market in Brisbane would suit singletons only.

The apartment in a building of five, at 163 Park Road in the suburb of Yeerongpilly, allows for visitors. However, no sleepovers are allowed.

“Guests are permitted to visit but are not able to stay overnight,” the listing states.

It comes down to safety. Each apartment in the complex is for single occupancy only due to council and fire restrictions, the listing explains.

A $445-per-week house which has been rented out in Queensland features a surprise addition in the living room.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at 72 Colchester Crescent in Kirwan contains a glass tall box in the main communal space that looks just like a shower.

Agent Kaye Matheson of McGrath Townsville – who leased the address after a campaign of solid interest – told Nine at the time the property launched on the market that she commonly got questions concerning the box and its purpose.

The glass box is a greenhouse, for growing plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables. The glass allows maximum exposure to sunlight. This one has a skylight above.
