The Block 2018: Domain judge Alice Stolz's inside word on week two, guest bedroom week

Kerrie and Spence are on track to get so many bits right this week and I love that they’re giving it their all to make one hero piece really memorable this week. But, purely on the grounds of lack of flexibility, I’m not convinced a built in library is the right concept.

Shelves can limit big slabs of wall space and often steal away a corner that for many eventual buyers may make a great nook to put a desk or a sofa. They get points from me for heading in the right direction but have failed to propel themselves far enough for a win.

Hayden and Sara appear to be going in all sorts of directions this week. They need a plan, they need to know when to stop and they need to have identified their target buyer.

This is where project management skills are key and the lack of them this week means they’re delivering a bit of rustic-look wall, a rather stylish ceiling and then what I’m concerned will be an under-cooked desk area.

Apartments, unlike the average house, cannot afford to have wasted space. Every space needs to be used in a clever way. I feel like these two really need to come together, carve up who is doing what and start working as a true team. And a team that is going in the same direction, at the same time.

I think in the case of Courtney and Hans, we’re seeing that size is not everything when it comes to guest rooms. But, while size may be something you can get away with, quality and execution is everything. Especially when it comes to luxury apartments.

That slip-slopey ceiling is concerning. We’ll see what Keith and Dan have to say but instinct tells me these two may end up losing much of their final styling time to repair work.

I gave Norm and Jess a bit of a dressing down this week and some tough love when it came to their finances, project management and the state of their room. I just cannot believe, with the enormity of what they have to do over the next two months, they will get there if they continue in such a shambolic state.

For one thing, they’ll learn pretty quickly their trades will not turn up if they’re not paying them. And another, how can they track their spend if they’re not itemising their expenses? The frustration is that these two are good, very good, but as we know, running out of cash before you even tackle the kitchen and trying to sell a shell is not going to cut it on The Block. No matter how good the agent is, I’m not sure a renovator’s delight would sell come auction day.

That said, the styling sounds lush and beautiful and I love the voluminous cupboards.

But this week, the wow-factor hit new heights from the way Carla and Bianca’s room is shaping up. This is a guest room that looks like it could be in a hip luxury hotel around the corner.

The soaring ceiling, gorgeous skylights, luxurious walk-in robe, and it sounds like it’s on track to be styled beautifully. The only way is up for these two and it’s looking mighty fine.

The scores

Bianca and Carla: 8

Norm and Jess: 7

Hayden and Sara: 6

Courtney and Hans: 6

Kerrie and Spence: 6
