The winning apartment from 2015’s season of The Block passed in at auction with no bidding on Saturday.
Even the star power of selling agent Jesse Raeburn, real estate partner with The Agency and contestant on this year’s season of the renovation reality TV show, could not tempt potential buyers to raise their hands.
The three-bedroom top-floor pad at 6/1a Affleck Street, South Yarra offers knockout views across the suburb and a floor plan of 240 square metres.
Contestants Dean and Shay Paine transformed the home four years ago, winning the top prize and $750,000 cash as the residence sold for $2.3 million to an investor.
It later resold in 2018 for $2.365 million, public records show, and was taken to auction on Saturday with a price guide of $2.3 million to $2.45 million.
Auctioneer Peter Kakos, The Agency’s general manager for Victoria, was met with silence when he opened proceedings.
He then made a vendor bid of $2.1 million and asked the crowd for a $50,000 rise.
Silence reigned and he took a brief break to seek instructions from the vendor.
After one more attempt to sell the property under the hammer did not draw a response, he passed it in.
Later Saturday afternoon, Mr Kakos told Domain a couple of parties were in negotiations.
The property will be relisted with a single price guide of $2,445,000, he said.
Having a listing linked to a TV show gathered “more eyeballs” for the home, he said, but this did not mean it would translate into a deal.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean you are going to get a better result,” he said.
“You can’t just rely on [the show].”
Although the market in general is tracking well, some homes were selling before or after auction, he said.
“You don’t need multiple bidders to get the desired result.”
Mr Raeburn last year auctioned Block contestants Courtney and Hans’ apartment at the Gatwick in St Kilda.
He appears on this season with his partner Mel, overhauling the Oslo in the same suburb.
