I truly cannot believe we are at week three on The Block. During lockdown the days, weeks and months are all blending in together, but at least we have room reveal Sundays to keep us chugging along.
What better way to spend your evening than judging other people?
The Blockheads this week are tasked with delivering a master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe in their Brighton homes. Jimmy and Tam have been boasting they will get four wins in a row, Jasmin has had her first cry and the worksite had its first “rona” scare.
Sarah and George are chuffed with their restored ceiling rose from the original house, but Keith tears them to shreds on the imperfections. This, as you can imagine, upsets Sarah.
Harry and Tash struggled so much to paint their colossal room that Scotty felt he needed to step in. He then walks himself to the McCafe van and says “I need you to do your thing” to the barista.
The barista then literally winds back a clock and suddenly the contestants have an extra hour to finish their rooms.
The lucky ducks in House 1 are then joined by the farmer legends from House 3 to help deliver their room – seriously, can they get any sweeter?
And just like that it’s tools down and we can finally get a peek at those walk-in robes.
At the beginning of the judging Scotty throws some punches at the contestants, asking if any of them have the physical ability to beat Jimmy and Tam. Oooh, burn.
Harry and Tash are up first with their small apartment, sorry I mean master bedroom. The judges are floored by the sheer size of the room.
“I’ve had apartments smaller than this,” says Darren. I mean, haven’t we all? My apartment used to be so small the bedroom had three walls and a curtain, it was what a real estate agent would describe as “cozy”.
Neale says, “Four Velux skylights and a big arse fan, that’s a great place to start.” I can’t help but giggle at his use of a naughty word, it’s so un-Neale like.
Shaynna is all about the television that looks like a framed mirror – she will only ever accept a television in a bedroom in this form. She clearly does not know the pure joy of watching Netflix in bed with a crisp Savvy B.
The wallpaper gets a big tick and Shaynna is “really proud of them”.
“There are enough period references here,” Neale says and the grin on Harry and Tash’s faces are priceless. It has taken four room reveals for them to get feedback this complimentary.
The judges then enter the walk-in robe. Darren says “it’s grand” and they are big fans of the design choices.

But Shaynna soon discovers that she is not able to reach some of the wardrobe hanging space. Our resident storage queen does suffer from short-girl-probs, but any wardrobe should have that in mind.
House 2 is up next and Sarah and George are already looking good with Shaynna’s first words, “That is a dream come true, that ceiling panel. So divine.” Darren says it was “restored beautifully” and “this is exactly what the period is known for”.
Neale agrees the ceiling rose was exquisite but says the wallpaper is “cancelling everything else out”.
They all like the fireplace and the pendant light choice but Shaynna thinks that the couple should have “let the detailing breathe” and not over-complicated the room with too much colour.
They then enter the wardrobe space and for some reason we are treated to panning shots of some of the daggiest shoes I have ever laid my eyes on. Instant deduction of points from me just for the wardrobe fashion choices. They look like they should be paired with a GASP scarf dress in 2002.
Darren notes there is “way more hanging space” in this wardrobe than Harry and Tash’s and while it is less glamorous, it is very functional.
Neale says, “There is no romance, no glamour, I find this really ugly.” He must’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed for today’s judging.
And seriously, what is with all the dancing from the judges this season? Darren finds that the mirror has speakers in it and starts jamming out while looking at himself.
Now it’s Daniel and Jade’s turn to impress the judges. Scotty says the first thing that caught their eye was that wallpaper, and “they love it”. “Very Hollywood and very ’30s,” according to Neale.
Shaynna whacks the couple with a backhander and says “as daggy as those bedside pendants are, I love them”. If the contestants were confused before, imagine how they are feeling now.
Darren says that “the heritage detailing in here doesn’t look forced” and they understand the brief.
Neale notes that the floral display shows the couple’s “chutzpah”, which, for those at home not familiar with Yiddish, means extreme self-confidence or audacity. What I would give to see a producer teach Scotty how to say that correctly.
Darren has issue with the master room having a queen-sized bed and is concerned that for a Brighton five-bedder, it’s probably not enough for the market. I mean, first they have to contend with the idea of cold flooring, now a peasant-sized bed. What has this world come to?
Into the wardrobe and the judges are very happy with the styling choices and the layout.
Shaynna discovers a spinning shoe rack and is very happy with her find. Neale adds, “That’s cool, actually.”
Neale finishes up the couple’s judging and says, “Daniel and Jade are back on track.”
Luke and Jasmin prior to judging are feeling very confident and seem to have found their rhythm with balancing old and new – let’s just wait and see what the judges think.
“Oh my goodness, goodness, goodness,” says Shaynna as she enters and immediately plonks herself onto the bay window seat.
“Isn’t this beautiful?” says Neale. All of the judges are very much enjoying this room and Neale adds this couple are on a “beautiful trajectory”. “I feel like I just landed at Raffles Hotel in Singapore,” he says.
Shaynna says, “It feels like a home.”
“If they could do it better, show me, show me how,” says Darren.
And with that it is looking like Jasmin will no longer be saying “sorry Shaynna”. Until the judges notice another queen-sized bed sneaking into master bedroom week.
The contestants obviously do not get that a Brighton resident needs their partner to be at LEAST an arms-length away from them when sleeping. Anything less is simply unacceptable.
The judges are now into the wardrobe, and personally this walk-in is speaking to me – the black and white detailing and the fancy schmancy lights, sign me up.
All three feel there is not enough hanging space in this wardrobe like Harry and Tash’s and that this one slip-up cost them “having the perfect room”, according to Scotty.
And now finally, our resident winners are up. Can they remain carry-over champs this week?
“Glorious,” says Darren as he checks out the skylights, the brick chimney and vaulted ceilings.
“Dead-set, I never thought I would say I love that cream brick, but I love that cream brick,” he adds. And I dead-set agree, it is refreshing to see contestants shake it up a little.
“I am getting a stiff neck just looking up at the ceiling, it’s incredible,” Neale says, adding “Jimmy and Tam have really understood the way to fuse the ’50s with the present day.”
“They just get better each week,” he says. Darren notes, “They have that special thing you just can’t teach, and that’s style.”
I am beginning to think the judges are about to start a fan Insta account for Jimmy and Tam at this point, they are throwing around compliments like the Garnier girl giving samples at the Australian Open. Can they do no wrong?
Into the wardrobe and they are very confused with the whole bathroom-into-the-robe sitch that this couple have decided to design.
Scotty lets them know, “If I am doing a ‘Henry the third’ and my missus needs to get changed for work, she would have to go through the bathroom.”
Um, ew Scotty. What’s with the potty talk this season? Also, won’t this house have like a hundred toilets available?
Regardless of the wardrobe placement, the judges all think that the physical space of the walk-in is small.
“I’d like to know why they made it so small,” says Shaynna. “This is a disaster,” she adds. Uh-oh, guys, looks like the angels have had their wings clipped.
Darren says the bedroom is one of the best he has seen on The Block and the robe is one of the most disappointing.
With that judging is done and the not-so-golden couple will need to reconsider their layout choices in future.
Next week the couples are working on their master en suites and I wonder if Jimmy and Tam will take Darren’s advice and move their wardrobe …
